ABSTRACT

First of all, our project is called Mordassa. In English, Gag. It means something that closes your mouth, so it is the perfect word to describe our willingness to achieve just the opposite effect with our protestant designs and audio-visuals.

During the project, we had been creating four, as we like to call them, wearable sculptures. This term was created by one of the most influential artists in our project, Aloma Lafontama, with whom we had the pleasure to have an interview, and this concept really suits our work. Each of the wereable pieces that we had developed relates to one of the elements of nature: air, water, fire and earth. They are also meant to criticise some problems of our present society, such as sexism, climate change, fast fashion or capitalism. Furthermore, each design had gone through a transformation, making the “dress” or sculpture ephemeral, with an expiry date. Besides Aloma’s contributions to our project, we also could count on Anna Estany to uplift our designs so we could take advantage of her knowledge.

On the other hand, throughout this project we could fulfill all our objectives, which were mainly to show radical messages through our designs, and shock the audience, making them think about society and its actions. We also had the opportunity to get to know more about some issues that concern us and transform them into some kind of art, allowing us to unite two of our interests: the achievement of a better society through protestant actions and design.
